A 2 p.m. blaze gutted Chateau Walker and the International Checker Hall of Fame on Lynn Ray Road. Over 60 firefighters from Petal, Hattiesburg, and Macedonia worked together to battle the blaze that produced a thick black cloud of smoke which could be seen more than 3 miles away. The Hall of Fame had been home to many international checkers tournaments.  But, in 2006, owner Charles Walker pleaded guilty to money-laundering charges.
